Nitriding Steels

Nitriding Steels are heat-treatable steels which, owing to their nitride-forming additions (aluminium, chromium, molybdenum), are particularly suited for gas nitriding and tufftriding.

Nitriding steels are employed for components which are subjected to heavy wear and severe pressures; they must exhibit high surface hardness and good core strength. The improved surface hardness and wear resistance impart outstanding sliding and running properties to the steel parts. Heavy compressive stresses within the nitrided surface layer considerably improve fatigue strength.

Maximum hardness of the nitrided case (900-1200 HV) can be attained in aluminium alloyed steels. For steels containing chromium and molybdenum, the obtainable case hardness is in the range of 750-1100 HV.

High-tensile alloy steels, pre-hardened alloyed plastic mould tool steels, and hardened and tempered hot work tool steels can be gaseous nitrided/nitro-carburised. Some stainless steels can be plasma/ion nitrided.
